‘Rostrato’ is the leitmotif of the Barovier&Toso 2018 collections

The extensive design archives and carefully preserved techniques handed down from generation to generation represent an almost infinite resource: a legacy matched by few others, encompassing centuries of tradition. One such example is ‘rostrato’, a complex technique invented by Ercole Barovier in 1938, which consists of extruding a series of points from the glass that give it a ‘prehistoric’ look.

These drawings and techniques form the inspiration for the six new collections that are to enrich the already extensive lighting catalogue from Barovier&Toso: four chandelier collections, each very different but linked by an underlying theme, and two table lamp collections, stunning, opulent and extremely contemporary.

Collections

Venezia 1295

At the very heart of it all is the culmination of six hundred years of tradition handed down from father to son through changing times and fashions: a collection of chandeliers rich in history, detail and emotion. It is comprised of four chandeliers and a wall light, all featuring a recurring motif: ‘rostrato’, a technique invented by Ercole Barovier almost a century ago developing techniques used by his ancestors. In addition to crystal, it is available in four soft colours, with polished chrome finishing.

Collections

Quadri

Like a tulip from a parallel universe, the delicate stems of the Quadri seem to protect its curled pistils which, fashioned using a centuries-old technique, cast delicate shadows with their refracted light. The collection is comprised of four chandeliers and two wall lights in five soft colours. All the candle cups are in crystal, while the metal finishes are in polished chrome.

Florian

Our historic archives provide a wealth of inspiration, and it was through them that the Florian design, a non-circular chandelier, was conceived. The lines of the Florian are so retro as to be contemporary, accentuated by massive glass lampshades created using the ‘rostrato’ technique invented by Ercole Barovier, intensifying the sparkle of the lights and making this chandelier a unique piece of craftsmanship. The collection is made up of two wall lights and four chandeliers with 4, 6, 8 or 10 lights, available uniquely in crystal, with a choice of finishing in polished chrome or satin bronze.

Collections

Rosati

Simple, elegant lines that transcend fashion: Rosati is a collection with a classic feel, rendered extremely modern through the arrangement of its transparent candle cups and the subtle colouring of the arms and the main body of the chandelier. Each candle cup holds a little stroke of genius: a ‘rostrato’, a piece of glass with extruded pointed tips, which hides the LED lamps from view. Their light is refracted infinitely as it passes through the glass tips that are at the heart of the ‘rostrato’ technique. Increasing the overall brilliance are two further ‘rostrato’ circlets, lit by internal LEDs, inserted into the body of the chandelier, one at the top and one at the bottom. The collection comprises four chandeliers with up to 18 arms, and one wall light. The metallic parts are finished in polished chrome.

Collections

Ercole

Inspired by an original idea by Ercole Barovier in the 1940s and created using the ‘rostrato’ technique he had just invented, the Ercole collection is distinguished by a rich play of light that creates a sense of luxurious glamour. It comprises a delicate yet imposing floor lamp and two table lamps in different sizes: the bigger of the two includes an additional light source inside the base, controlled separately. The metal finishing are in polished chrome.

Collections

Camparino

Camparino is an elegant, sophisticated table lamp that brings together past and present in a single, compact piece. On the one hand it
reflects Murano glassmaking tradition, in that it uses the ‘rostrato’ technique; on the other, it represents the ultimate in modernity: its rechargable lithium battery allows it to be transported anywhere, while contactless technology means that it can be turned on or off and its brightness adjusted with just a movement of the hand. The base is in precious marble, in two options: White Carrara and Belgian Black.
